Fascinating facts about Euston station

  • It is the UK’s busiest inter-city passenger terminal, serving more than 71 million people each year.
  • Euston was the first inter-city railway terminal in London and the first railway hotels were built here. It opened on July 20, 1837, as the terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway.
  • Nearby you will find the British Library, British Museum and the Wellcome Collection, which features the 19th-century collector Henry Wellcome's medical antiquities, plus hi-tech modern displays and art.
  • The station takes its name from a stately home in Suffolk. The land that it was built on was owned by George Henry Fitzroy, the 4th Duke of Grafton, whose family home was Euston Hall. The country house is located in the small village of Euston, south of Thetford. 
  • It is believed that Matthew Flinders, the first person to circumnavigate Australia, is buried beneath platform 12 of Euston station. Flinders was interred in 1814 in St James’s Gardens, a former burial ground.
