Working at The Red Lion in Basingstoke, I've come to appreciate what makes this old place tick. We're right in the town center—proper convenient, two minutes' walk from the station—but step inside and you're in this beautiful Tudor building that's been here since Shakespeare's time. The beams are original, the fireplaces are real, and somehow we've managed to squeeze in modern heating and decent Wi-Fi without ruining the vibe. Our meeting rooms work brilliantly for local businesses—proper AV setup, whiteboards, the lot—but we also do a cracking wedding reception or birthday party. The main function room opens onto a courtyard that's lovely for summer drinks, and we can handle pretty much any setup you need. Band? DJ? Business presentation followed by dancing? We've done it all. The kitchen does everything from working lunches to three-course dinners, and our bar's fully stocked for whatever your crowd drinks. Having 22 rooms upstairs is dead handy. Your boss can prep for the morning presentation without battling traffic, or wedding guests can stumble upstairs instead of hunting for taxis. Each room's different—some have those dramatic sloping ceilings, others look over the high street—but they're all comfortable and properly soundproofed. Being independent means we can actually say yes to things the chains would have policies against. North Wessex Downs are right on our doorstep if anyone fancies exploring, but honestly, most people are happy just soaking up the atmosphere here.
