About Temple Island
Every celebration at Temple Island begins with a boat journey across the River Thames, setting the tone for something truly special. We've been hosting parties and wedding receptions on this private island near Henley-on-Thames since our Georgian folly was first built by James Wyatt in 1771, originally as a fishing lodge for Fawley Court. The heart of our venue is the Etruscan Room, where restored frescoes create an intimate atmosphere for up to 40 guests. From here, you'll look out across the river and surrounding countryside through windows that frame the view like paintings. The room works beautifully for candlelit dinners or afternoon celebrations, with natural light filtering through to highlight the historic artwork on our walls. When parties need more space, we arrange for an elegant marquee on our riverside lawns. This extends our capacity to 120 guests while maintaining that sense of being somewhere completely private and removed from everyday life. The marquee sits perfectly against the backdrop of water meadows and wooded hills that surround the island. Our experienced caterers handle everything from cocktail receptions to formal dinners, working alongside our event manager who coordinates each detail of your celebration. We're positioned where Oxfordshire meets Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, making us accessible for guests traveling from Reading, Oxford, and the surrounding areas - though that boat ride across means you feel wonderfully far from anywhere. The combination of our historic building, riverside setting, and complete privacy makes Temple Island particularly suited to wedding receptions and milestone celebrations.
