Portuguese azulejo tiles catch the candlelight as your guests descend into our Bar 1790 Basement Semi-Private space, where the original stone walls that once protected George Sandeman's port barrels now create an intimate setting for groups of up to 30 seated or 50 standing. The long red banquette that lines the wall has become a favourite spot for birthday groups who love how the patterned backrest creates perfect photo opportunities, while the mirrored walls make even smaller gatherings feel expansive. Our basement retains the cool temperature that made it perfect for storing port two centuries ago, though now it keeps champagne chilled and conversations flowing. The herringbone flooring guides guests naturally between the wooden tables where we serve Toby's famous cod croquettes, and the compact bar area where our bartenders shake up Sandeman Sours using recipes inspired by the vintage port posters decorating the walls. Corporate groups particularly appreciate how the semi-private nature allows them to maintain the energy of the main bar while having their own defined space for presentations or toasts. The acoustics down here work brilliantly, whether you're giving a speech from beside the bar or letting the conversation flow naturally around the tables.
