The Orpen Room brings together art and history in one of our most intimate spaces at IWM London. Sir William Orpen's paintings watch over gatherings from the rich, dark walls, their wartime scenes adding depth and conversation to every event. We've hosted everything from corporate board meetings to milestone birthday dinners here, and the artwork never fails to spark discussion among guests. For seated events, we arrange the room for up to 60 people around our long dining tables. The layout works particularly well for formal dinners, where the table settings, complete with fresh floral arrangements, create an atmosphere that feels both grand and personal. When configured for standing receptions, we can welcome 70 guests, with the paintings providing natural gathering points as people move through the space. Natural light filters in during daytime events, softening the dramatic wall colours and highlighting details in Orpen's brushwork. For evening parties, the lighting transforms the room, creating an intimate atmosphere that makes larger celebrations feel wonderfully private. Through the windows, your guests can glimpse the museum's front entrance with its impressive naval guns, a reminder of the unique setting. The room's versatility extends beyond numbers and layouts. We've seen it work beautifully for product launches where the historical context adds gravitas, private dining experiences where the art provides talking points between courses, and corporate presentations where the setting elevates the occasion beyond a standard meeting room. Our catering team adapts menus to complement the room's character, whether that's canapés during a drinks reception or a multi-course dinner. The space connects easily to our other event areas if you're planning a larger celebration that moves between rooms. You'll find us just a short walk from both Lambeth North and Waterloo stations, making arrival simple for guests travelling from across London.
