The Terrace at Barber-Surgeons Hall transforms from conference breakout space to evening party venue with just a change in lighting. This paved outdoor area runs the full length of our Great Hall, with views that stop conversations mid-sentence: the Barbers' Physic Garden spreads below, while a section of the original London Wall rises alongside. We've furnished the space with wooden tables and chairs, adding colourful cushions that guests actually use rather than politely avoid. Large umbrellas dot the terrace, providing shade during afternoon receptions when the sun hits just right. The combination works particularly well for drinks receptions, where up to 60 guests can spread out comfortably without feeling cramped against the railings. Our terrace comes into its own during evening events. The garden below takes on a different character as dusk falls, and the medieval wall becomes a dramatic backdrop for celebrations. We've installed proper outdoor lighting, so your photographer won't be wrestling with shadows, and the paved surface means no one's heels sink into grass. The gated design keeps the space private while maintaining that outdoor atmosphere guests want. The indoor-outdoor flow works brilliantly here. During conferences, delegates spill out for coffee breaks, grateful for fresh air between sessions. For evening parties, the terrace becomes an extension of the Great Hall, with guests moving naturally between spaces. Our entertainment licence covers the terrace too, and we've seen everything from jazz quartets to DJs set up out here. Being in Monkwell Square means we're sheltered from street noise, yet Barbican and Moorgate stations remain walking distance away. The combination of accessibility and seclusion, plus those views of medieval London, makes this outdoor space properly useful rather than just decorative.
