Our castle walls have witnessed centuries of celebrations, and today we continue that tradition with 71 guest rooms spread throughout the original fortress and our carefully restored Courtyard. From our battlements, you'll spot the River Wear winding below and Durham County Cricket Ground just beyond. We've preserved the castle's medieval character while adding the comforts today's guests expect. Our Classic, Superior, and Feature rooms each tell their own story through original stonework and period furnishings. For those seeking true castle living, our three suites—the King James, Queen Anne, and Bishop's—feature four-poster beds and roll-top baths in chambers once reserved for nobility. Our Knights Restaurant occupies what was once the castle's great hall, where our chefs prepare classic dishes with creative touches that have earned us numerous awards. Before dinner, many guests gather in our Library Bar, surrounded by ancient books and armor, for drinks and lighter fare. We regularly transform our State Rooms for weddings and conferences, accommodating groups up to 150 people. Our meeting spaces blend original castle architecture with modern presentation technology. Beyond traditional events, we offer experiences you won't find elsewhere—our Elizabethan banquets recreate medieval feasts complete with period entertainment, while murder mystery evenings let guests solve crimes within our historic walls.
