About Collective Temperance Hospital
Between 2015 and 2017, we transformed the Insull Wing of the old National Temperance Hospital into Collective Temperance Hospital, breathing new life into this Victorian building at 110 Hampstead Rd, Kings Cross. After sitting empty for over ten years, the space became home to creative start-ups and tech entrepreneurs who needed more than just a desk and WiFi. Our five floors housed everything from free hot-desking areas where freelancers worked side by side, to subsidised private offices with lockable doors for growing teams. The original Victorian architecture created an atmosphere that balanced history with innovation - high ceilings and period features alongside gigabit internet speeds and modern meeting rooms. We designed the space specifically for early-stage businesses in creative and tech sectors. Members had 24/7 access through key cards, could store their bikes securely, and grab a shower after cycling in. Phone booths dotted throughout the building gave privacy for important calls, while lockers kept personal items safe. Our meeting rooms accommodated everything from two-person brainstorms to larger team presentations. What made us different was our community approach. We asked each member to contribute two hours monthly - whether running a workshop, mentoring another business, or helping maintain the space. This created genuine connections between the designers, developers, and entrepreneurs who worked here. Beyond offices and desks, we offered event spaces for product launches and networking events, rehearsal rooms for creative projects, workshop areas for hands-on work, and classroom spaces for training sessions. Everything operated on flexible terms because we understood start-ups needed room to grow without restrictive contracts. The building served as more than workspace - it became an incubator where businesses could access the facilities, connections, and support needed to develop their ideas into successful ventures.
