About Blackfriars Banquet Hall
70 Standing / Reception
50 Seated
Stone walls that have stood for eight centuries create the backdrop for wedding celebrations in Blackfriars Banquet Hall, where medieval architecture frames contemporary romance. We've carefully preserved every architectural detail of this Grade 1 Listed space while creating an atmosphere that feels both grand and intimate for your special day. The hall transforms throughout the day as natural light filters through original stained-glass windows, casting jewel-toned patterns across oak dining tables crafted by local artisans. By evening, our chandeliers and candelabras create a warm glow that highlights the authentic medieval banners hanging overhead. These historic touches combine with thoughtful modern comforts to create a space that feels timeless rather than trapped in time. Our venue accommodates up to 50 seated guests, with long oak tables that encourage conversation and connection. Each table setting features elegant candelabras alongside carefully chosen florals, typically incorporating red roses and delicate greenery that complement the stone surroundings. The matching oak chairs echo the craftsmanship of the tables, maintaining the cohesive medieval aesthetic throughout. As a venue licensed for civil ceremonies by Newcastle City Council, we can host both your ceremony and reception within these historic walls. Many couples choose to exchange vows beneath our medieval arches before moving to our sheltered courtyard for champagne, or gathering in the Parlour Bar with its ancient stone walls for pre-dinner drinks. The Tasting Room offers another distinctive space for smaller ceremonies or intimate gatherings. Our kitchen holds an AA Rosette and features in both the Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide. We prepare traditional British cuisine using locally sourced ingredients, understanding that exceptional food forms the heart of wedding celebrations. Located in central Newcastle with easy access to transport links, our 13th-century Dominican friary offers a wedding venue where centuries of celebration continue today.
