About Chetham's Library
Step into Chetham's Library and you're stepping into 600 years of Manchester history. Our sandstone walls have stood here since 1421, making this Grade I listed building one of the city's oldest treasures. Since 1653, we've operated as the oldest public library in the English-speaking world, and today we open our doors for your special events. The Baronial Hall forms the heart of our venue offerings. With its soaring timber roof and original inglenook fireplace, this medieval space creates an atmosphere you won't find anywhere else in Manchester. We can arrange theatre-style seating for up to 90 guests here, and the acoustics make it particularly special for recitals and performances. Corporate groups love the hall for workshops and presentations - there's something about the centuries-old beams overhead that makes every gathering feel significant. Right next door, our Association Room works beautifully as a breakout space during larger events or stands alone for more intimate seminars and meetings. The Library itself offers another dimension entirely - timber ceilings arch over embellished wooden panelling and historic reading desks. This is where Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used to meet and discuss their ideas, and now filmmakers regularly choose these rooms as their backdrop. We're tucked into Manchester's Medieval Quarter, just a short walk from Victoria Station. Our neighbours include hotels, shops, and cultural attractions, making it easy for your guests to explore before or after their visit. Our spaces adapt well to corporate events, private dinners, concerts, workshops, receptions, and filming projects. Each event becomes part of our continuing story - your celebration or meeting taking place where scholars have gathered for nearly four centuries.
