About Nottingham Mechanics Institute
The grand Victorian building on North Sherwood Street has been our home since 1837, and we've spent nearly two centuries perfecting the art of bringing people together. As an educational charity in Nottingham's city centre, we offer much more than just meeting rooms – though our selection of spaces accommodating 10 to 80 people certainly forms the backbone of what we do. Our rooms host everything from corporate training days and conferences to the weekly gatherings of the Nottingham Writers Club and Nottingham Shakespeare Society. Each space has its own character, from intimate meeting rooms perfect for focused discussions to our larger halls that comfortably seat 80 for presentations and workshops. We've kept the period features that make these rooms special while ensuring they have everything modern meetings require. Beyond the meeting spaces, we run our own Leisure Learning courses throughout the year, turning our building into a hub of continuous education. Our members make good use of the library and reading room, where shelves of books and DVDs create a quiet retreat between sessions. The fully licensed Café Bar serves as an informal meeting point – many of our regular groups start or end their sessions here over coffee or something stronger. We welcome external bookings for conferences, talks, workshops, and training days, as well as educational activities and community events. While the building primarily serves our members and their guests (visitors pay a small fee at reception when accompanied), our meeting rooms are available to anyone looking for a professional yet characterful venue in the heart of Nottingham.
