Our Chapter House dates back to the 13th century, when monks gathered daily beneath its soaring octagonal ceiling to discuss Abbey business. Today, this extraordinary space welcomes up to 120 guests for standing receptions, offering your wedding celebration a setting unlike any other in London. Step through Britain's oldest door, crafted in the 1050s, and you'll find yourself in one of the country's most impressive chapter houses. The medieval tiled floor bears witness to centuries of footsteps, from Benedictine monks to members of Parliament who met here in the 14th century before relocating to Westminster Palace. Above, the vaulted ceiling rises from a central stone pillar, creating an architectural masterpiece that draws every eye upward. Natural light pours through the magnificent stained glass windows, their jewel-toned panels casting pools of sapphire, ruby and emerald across the ancient stones. The walls themselves tell stories through intricate paintings of the Apocalypse and Last Judgement, medieval artworks that spark conversation and wonder among guests. Originally built with tiered stone seating for 80 monks, these architectural features now provide intimate corners where wedding guests can pause and take in the remarkable surroundings. We typically arrange Chapter House receptions alongside our East Cloister or Cellarium spaces, creating a natural flow for your celebration. Access is through the East Cloister via 10 historic steps, and while we don't have lift access to this particular space, our team will ensure smooth arrangements for all your guests. You'll find us moments from Westminster and St James's Park stations, perfectly positioned in the heart of London. The Chapter House transforms wedding receptions into unforgettable experiences, where your guests celebrate surrounded by nearly a thousand years of history.
