About Bar 1790 at The Sandeman Quarter ltd
Portuguese tiles line the walls where George Sandeman once stored his famous port barrels back in 1790. We've transformed these historic cellars on St Swithin's Lane into Bar 1790, where the original stone arches now frame our dining spaces and the old barrel rooms have become intimate corners for your celebrations. Our Head Chef Toby Lever brings Portugal to the City through his menu - think crispy cod croquettes with romesco sauce that guests can't stop talking about, paper-thin slices of Iberico ham, and those addictive little Padron peppers that always spark conversation. The dark wood furniture we chose echoes the port casks that once filled these rooms, while our red chandeliers cast a warm glow that transforms the space as evening falls. For private parties, we open up the Barrel Cellar where temperature-controlled stone walls once protected precious vintages. Groups of 20 can gather around the original oak beams, while larger celebrations flow through the Sandeman Room where vintage port posters tell stories of our building's past. Corporate teams book these spaces for wine tastings where we pour from our extensive Portuguese collection, or cocktail masterclasses featuring our Sandeman Sour - a house creation that balances port with citrus. The original loading bay has become our main bar, stocked with Portuguese wines you won't find elsewhere in the City, plus ports from every decade since we reopened. Whether you're planning birthday drinks, company celebrations, or wine-focused gatherings, our team helps you make use of every historic detail - from the exposed brickwork that provides natural acoustics to the secluded alcoves perfect for toasts and speeches.
